SkegGuard

Installation is a straightforward 4 step process and takes less than 10 minutes. Additional items needed for the installation are gloves, a mallet (leather, rubber, or wooden), and a 1/4″ drill bit and drill.

Caution: Always wear gloves to prevent injury from cuts when working with this product.

Step 1) Determine Skeg Fitment

Ensure proper fit before installing the Megaware SkegGuard. There must be at least 2-3 inches of upper skeg remaining to secure the SkegGuard. If any portion of the skeg has been bent or distorted, it must be re-conformed to the original shape.

Visually check the fit of the SkegGuard by holding it up against your skeg. Keep in mind that some models are universal and may not mirror your skeg’s exact shape and size. Some models may overhang slightly or not fully extend up to the lower gearcase.

Step 2) Prep your Skeg

File any spurs or jagged edges smooth so the SkegGuard can easily slide over the existing skeg. Some lower units may have a reinforced wear tab at the lower end or bottom of the skeg. The wear tab will need to be filed flush with the skeg to provide a proper fit. If desired, prime and paint the exposed portion of the skeg before installing the SkegGuard.

Step 3) Tap the SkegGuard into Place

Using a mallet (leather, rubber, or wooden), slide the SkegGuard onto the skeg and gently tap on it to get it started. Then drive it on with the mallet until it is fully seated.

Step 4) Install the Hardware

Using the pre-drilled mounting holes on the SkegGuard as pilot holes, drill into the skeg using a 1/4″ drill bit. Install the stainless steel self-locking hardware using the hex tools provided in the product package. The hardware is dipped in a thread locker to prevent the bolts from coming loose. (Two sets of hardware with varying lengths provide secure fitment to varying skeg thickness).
